Surgeon Quick Facts

What is BLIS?

BLIS is a highly specialized, privately held company whose mission is to improve access to surgery. BLIS has created an insurance product, BLISCare, to address the surgical risks of complications following weight loss surgery.

BLISCare is unique and exclusive to BLIS.  BLIS has built a proprietary one of a kind database on both the frequency and severity of bariatric surgical complications. Only surgeons who meet selective BLIS requirements can become a part of the BLIS Surgeon network and access the complication protection product.

In the event of a covered complication following surgery, BLIS directly reimburses all providers associated with that patient’s care pathway including: facility charges, surgical charges, and any ancillary charges.  The patient has no financial responsibility for this care.

BLISCare has covered over 1,700 cases and taken care of over $4 million dollars on behalf of covered patient’s complication related care. BLIS has over 110 active surgeons across the country incorporating BLISCare complication protection for their patients.

What can BLIS do for you?

Experience practice growth:

  • As a BLIS Program you are unique in your market, patients will seek you out.
  • The BLIS team will provide marketing and outreach support.
  • You will see an increased number of cash-pay patients in your practice.
Provide peace of mind to your patients:
  • Protect your patients from complication related medical bills.
How does BLISCare work?

BLISCare is a “casualty” insurance policy covering the surgeon, not a “health” insurance policy covering patients.  Each individual bariatric surgeon must complete a BLIS application and must meet BLIS underwriting requirements in order to participate.  If accepted, the surgeon works with BLIS to customize a version of BLISCare specific to their program.

On completion BLIS will issue an insurance policy from a U.S. licensed insurance carrier.  Prior to surgery the BLIS surgeon reports their patient to BLIS where the patient is added to the surgeons roster of covered cases.  If a covered complication event develops following surgery, BLIS will reimburse all providers for medical expense related to the care of the patient-when the care is authorized by the BLIS surgeon-and at pre-negotiated terms.

How do I become a BLIS Surgeon?  (underwriting requirements)

A number of requirements must be met in order to be accepted by BLIS.   Some of these include:
  • ASMBS membership
  • Minimum bariatric surgical procedure thresholds of lifetime and annual cases along with historical reported outcomes within expected norms
  • Hospital’s express support of participation
  • Mandatory enrollment of all covered cases

What does BLISCare pay for?

BLIS staff training and patient enrollment:

Participating surgeons will receive training by BLIS staff on all aspects of BLIS.  Training will occur after the surgeon has completed the design of their verison of BLISCare and final insurance documents have been issued by BLIS.  At the conclusion of the training, surgeons will be able to report their cases to BLIS for protection.
